Lunch Box Jazz

LunchBox Jazz will bring musicians in their 60s – 90s to Miami-Dade County Public Schools for live jazz and blues performances during the students’ lunch periods. Most of these musicians used to play five nights a week during Overtown’s musical heyday but now, because of age, illness and lack of gigs, they struggle to pay for rent and food

School performances will give musicians a dignified way of paying their expenses, while at the same time introducing jazz and blues to thousands of public school children, most of whom have never before been exposed to such musical styles. Lunchbox Jazz will also help preserve a uniquely American and African American art form that was a critical part of Miami’s early music scene, ensuring its survival and the wellbeing of those music pioneers who performed it.
